Growing Your Garden from Scratch?

Make a plan

Design and plan your gardens. Figure out which vegetables, herbs or flowers you want to grow and which will work in your space. Make sure you pay close attention to germination and maturity rates on your seed's packaging. Keeping plants in small pots indoors for too long can cause them to become leggy and chlorotic. The average last frost date in our area is May 25, so don’t plant too early! Some plants are slow to germinate, some are quick, some can handle cooler temperatures, some need warm nights to survive. Without a greenhouse, starting seeds can be tricky, so be as organized as possible!

Have the right equipment

Decide whether you want to use plastic or peat, both have their advantages and drawbacks so pick the right materials for your home and time restraints. We stock everything you need to get your indoor garden growing. Trays, covers, peat pots in various sizes, plastic cell packs, plant labels, hand seeders, heat mats & more!

A good start with good soil

Successful seed germination requires light, nutrient-rich soil with plenty of aeration to allow space for a plant’s young, tender roots to take hold. We carry two germinating mixes - Moo Start and Espoma Seed Starter - that are excellent blends of everything a young plant needs to get growing, including mycorrhizae to help stimulate initial root growth. The stronger the root system, the stronger the plant!

Use the right seeds

Once you have a plan and your equipment set up, it's time to break out the seeds! Make sure to take inventory of what you have before buying more. If seeds have been stored in a dry, cool place they can last for years. Be aware that germination rates will decrease each season...so make sure you over-seed if using older materials. If you are unsure how old your seeds are or if they’re still viable, we can help! All our seeds are GMO-Free and most are USDA Certified Organic, ensuring that all the vegetables and flowers your grow will start out right!
